Orange Show Speedway

The Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino kicked off its season on March 25 with a presentation of Michael's story. Before the races began a parade lap was driven by Chris Hines, with Michael's picture on the truck. Chris Hines then spoke about Michael and made a plea for help in finding him, as well as reminding people to be especially careful with their children to prevent these situations from happening. I believe that Chris impacted many of the spectators.

Chris Hines participated in two races. The first was the "Trophy Dash," a race between the four top qualifiers, which he won.The second was the actual speedtruck race, consisting of 18 trucks. Chris came in third.

Many thanks to Chris, Donna, Sandy, and the rest of the team for helping us search for Michael, for their dedication to the cause of finding Missing Persons, and for making us welcome and comfortable at the race.

Chris Hines will be racing for Michael again in the third week of April at the racetrack in Irwindale, CA.

National Enquirer TV

Michael's story appeared on National Enquirer TV on March 3, 2000. The show did a very good job of telling the story. Mary and Miguel were also reinterviewed during the first week of March by San Diego TV stations 10, 8 and 6. Fox 6 distributed their story to stations in the western states. We are hoping to get more national TV coverage and would appreciate your help in contacting as many national news shows as you can.

Los Angeles / Long Beach Information Meeting

On January 2, 2000 an organizational meeting of volunteers was held at the Lakewood First Presbyterian Church in Long Beach. There was a wonderful turnout of 200+ people. Committees were formed as follows:

  1. Fundraiser events - chaired by Chris Wabich
  2. Homeless Shelter coverage - chaired by Bob Chaffee
  3. Hospital contact - chaired by Mary Van Valkenburg
  4. Street teen contact - chaired by Paul Van Valkenburg
  5. Music/Jazz Clubs - chaired by Jim Cool
  6. Police substation contact - chaired by Lindsey Chaffee
  7. Other (fire stations and forest rangers) chaired by Kathy Scott

Anyone wishing to help with any of these committees may contact us by email: Michael Negrete's Search Team

The meeting also generated other ideas on where to search. There are people contacting the Public Utilities Commission, the Post Office and lifeguards all up and down the coast to see if people who are outside everyday can aid in looking for Michael.

We would like to thank the church for allowing us to use their facility and all the people who came to the meeting.
